Congenital (penile) deviation is a rare form of penile curvature. Unlike acquired penile curvature (Peyronie’s disease), the condition is present from birth.
The cause of congenital penile curvature is unclear. The degree of curvature can vary significantly. In some cases, the curvature may be so pronounced that normal sexual intercourse is no longer possible or may cause pain during intercourse for the partner (dyspareunia).
Symptoms caused by congenital penile curvature can lead to anxiety, reduced self-esteem, and psychological stress.
Symptoms
Typical characteristics include:
-
Penile curvature: The penis is usually curved ventrally or ventrolaterally.
-
Penile length: Patients with congenital penile curvature generally have a relatively normal penile length.
-
Difficulties during sexual intercourse: These may occur in the patient or their partner due to the curvature.
Causes
The cause of congenital penile curvature is unclear.
Complications
Depending on the severity, the following complications may occur:
-
Impaired sexual intercourse
-
Erectile dysfunction
-
Anxiety and stress related to sexual activity and body image
-
Relationship strain
-
Impaired fertility due to difficulties with unimpeded intercourse
Diagnosis
The diagnosis is based on a detailed medical history and consultation. In addition, the degree and direction of penile curvature should be assessed using an artificially induced erection. A penile ultrasound is performed to detect additional pathologies within the penis. Furthermore, it can help identify vascular causes of erectile dysfunction, such as venous leak.
Therapy
Surgical correction of the curvature can be performed at any time. Whether surgery is appropriate and necessary depends on the degree of curvature and the extent to which sexual intercourse is impaired.
To minimize the loss of penile length during surgery, we perform curvature correction using a novel surgical technique developed by our team.
The excellent surgical outcomes and the high number of satisfied patients confirm the effectiveness of our approach.
