Prevention

Although there is no guarantee that bladder cancer can be prevented, you can significantly reduce your risk by taking the following measures:

  • Do not smoke or quit smoking.
Because: If you do not (or no longer) smoke, cancer-causing substances cannot accumulate in your bladder! If you do not smoke, do not start. If you do smoke, ask your doctor for advice on how to quit. Join a support group, try suitable medications, or use other methods to stop smoking.
  • Be careful when handling chemicals.
If you work with toxic substances, strictly follow all safety precautions to avoid exposure.
  • Drink enough water throughout the day.
In theory, drinking fluids—preferably water—can help flush harmful substances out of the bladder more quickly through urine. However, studies linking this to a reduced risk of bladder cancer have not yet been conclusive.
  • Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The more colorful and varied, the better. The antioxidants contained in fruits and vegetables may also help lower your risk of cancer.
