Coping

Every patient copes with a cancer diagnosis in their own way. Once the initial shock and fear that often accompany such a diagnosis begin to subside, you too will find your own personal ways and resources to better manage the daily challenges of cancer treatment and the recovery process.

These strategies may be helpful:

  • Educate yourself about kidney cancer
Learning more about kidney cancer can help you feel more confident and comfortable when making treatment decisions. Ask your doctor for detailed information about your diagnosis, including the specific type and stage of cancer. This can help you better understand your treatment options.
  • Take care of yourself
Pay close attention to your overall health during cancer treatment. Eat a healthy, balanced diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, and—if you feel up to it—try to engage in regular physical activity. Getting enough sleep is also very important.
  • Build a support system
Your friends and family care about you—accept their help when it’s offered. Let them share in your daily tasks. They can be a valuable support by helping with errands, preparing meals, or providing transportation, which allows you to focus more fully on your recovery. Simply talking to a close friend or family member about your feelings and concerns can also go a long way in reducing stress and emotional tension.
  • Take time for yourself
Set aside time each day just for you. Reading, relaxing, or listening to music can help you unwind. Writing down your thoughts and feelings in a journal can also be a great way to find emotional relief.
